Miss Texas Cares For Children Program
2007-2008

Texas Cares for Children has been developed through the collaborative efforts of the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse and the Miss America Organization. The Program has won the endorsement of former President Bush and then Secretary of Education, Lamar Alexander.

In 1994, the Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant Board of Directors announced that Miss Texas would be presenting this program to elementary, middle and high schools in Texas. BaShara Chandler, Miss Texas 1993 was the first Miss Texas to travel the state encouraging and motivating students to stay drug-free and pursue their goals. For the past 13 years, each Miss Texas has continued the state-wide speaking tour speaking at approximately 200 school assemblies throughout their year of service. Molly Hazlett, Miss Texas 2007 will keep this same hectic schedule as she travels the state.

Miss Texas is booked months in advance and travels 5 days a week from August through May speaking at several 30 to 45 minute assemblies each day to students of all ages. Many schools have had Miss Texas every year, and many schools are turned down each year because her busy schedule.

Molly incorporates personal experiences from her life that illustrate how overcoming obstacles and setback are part of reaching goals. Miss Texas has a positive message that focuses on self-esteem as it empowers students to say “No” to Drugs and Alcohol.

Over the past 13 years, the Miss Texas Organization has received hundreds of letters from educators endorsing this program and singing the praises of Miss Texas. Whether speaking at large assemblies or talking individually to troubled youth, Miss Texas is a compassionate, caring and encouraging mentor and role model to hundreds of thousands of Texans.

As an incentive for Texas school children to reach their goals and further their education the Miss Texas Organization has established the Texas Cares for Children Scholarship Program. Each year, $1000 scholarships are given to male high school seniors planning to attend a college or university. In the spring, applications are mailed to high school counselors. These scholarships are only available to students who attend a school in a school district in which Miss Texas has spoken. The winners are notified and are invited to attend the Miss Texas Pageant in Fort Worth.
